Krumau insider tips for a relaxing visit

At first glance, Český Krumlov seems like a place for a quick stroll through the old town. However, during our visit, we quickly realized that Krumlov truly shines when you take your time and explore the quieter paths between the castle, the Vltava River, and the narrow lanes. That's precisely what these insider tips for Český Krumlov are all about.

The city is a good fit for you if you enjoy walking, appreciate historical sites, and prefer a slower pace of travel. We found Český Krumlov particularly beautiful outside of peak hours. Only then do you realize how much of the city's atmosphere is contained in the courtyards, the views of the Vltava River, and the little paths between the famous sights.

For whom Krumau is particularly worthwhile

Český Krumlov is especially worthwhile if you're looking for a city that's easily explored on foot, where the paths, the views, and short breaks are almost more important than a packed itinerary. The old town is compact, which is precisely what makes it tempting to rush through the place too quickly.

Your visit will be more enjoyable if you consciously take your time, let yourself wander, and venture off the beaten path. Český Krumlov is less suitable if you want to see as much as possible in a very short time and are primarily focused on major highlights. In that case, you'll quickly be left with the impression of a beautiful but crowded place.

For us, the appeal of Český Krumlov lies precisely in the fact that history, enjoyment and quiet moments can be well combined here.

Krumau insider tips in the video

Join us for a walk through the old town of Český Krumlov, past the Cloak Bridge, quieter courtyards and viewpoints that many miss during a short visit.

We'll show you places where Český Krumlov feels more tranquil, share little stories from the town, and give you tips on where to find a pleasant place to eat and drink. This video is part of our slow travel series through South Bohemia.

Which sights in Krumau are truly worth your time?

The castle, the old town, and the castle tower are must-sees on any first visit to Český Krumlov. If it's your first time here, you shouldn't miss them. The difference lies more in how you incorporate them into your day. We found the town most enjoyable when we connected the well-known sights with quieter routes in between, rather than just following the main thoroughfares.

Stroll through the old town and don't just focus on the grand vistas. We often found the small details particularly charming, such as facades, gates, passageways, and the atmosphere of the alleyways in the early morning or during the quieter months. Around the castle grounds, it's also worth taking more than just one photo.

The paths themselves and the changing views of the city and the river bend contribute significantly to the charm of the place.

You get a different perspective of Český Krumlov from the water. Especially in summer, paths along the Vltava River or a view of the old town and castle from the riverbank are particularly beautiful. What stuck with us most was how drastically the atmosphere of the place changes depending on whether there are many day-trippers or whether it's quieter.

Our real insider tip for Český Krumlov isn't a single place, but rather the right time to go. We were there in winter and had many photo spots almost entirely to ourselves. If you want to experience Český Krumlov in a more peaceful setting, a visit outside of peak season is often more worthwhile than trying to find quiet corners amidst the biggest crowds.

Where dining in Krumau is particularly pleasant

In Český Krumlov, the best place to eat isn't necessarily where the view is most spectacular. Our impression was rather that the closer you stay to the most popular routes through the old town, the more carefully you should choose your restaurant. For a relaxing break, it's worth choosing places where you're not just popping in for a quick bite, but where you'll want to linger for a while.

If you're looking for atmosphere, a rustic inn is a good choice. If you want to eat with a view of the Vltava River, you'll often pay extra for the location. If a quiet place to sit is more important to you, it's usually worth taking a short detour away from the busiest streets. We often found the food more pleasant there than in the middle of the biggest crowds.

Here are some restaurants you can check out:

  1. Papa's Living Restaurant: Beautifully situated on the Vltava River, good for a break with a view.
  2. Hostinec Depo: a guesthouse that is well suited if you are looking for Czech cuisine in a relaxed environment.
  3. Tavern of the Two MariesInteresting for anyone who likes a historical setting.
  4. Collective Bistro: Rather modern and relaxed, good for those who prefer a more contemporary style.

If you want to experience Český Krumlov's culinary scene, don't just plan a quick meal. The town is most enjoyable when you don't schedule your day too tightly, but instead allow yourself time for a leisurely lunch or a relaxing café break.

When to best plan your trip to Krumau and how long you should stay

In our opinion, Český Krumlov is most worthwhile if you don't just come for two or three hours. While the old town is compact, this very compactness makes it tempting to leave too quickly. Your stay will be much more enjoyable if you plan an overnight stay or at least visit during off-peak hours. This way, you'll experience the town in a more peaceful atmosphere and avoid the busiest times of day.

We found Český Krumlov particularly pleasant outside of peak season. In winter, the old town felt much quieter, and we were able to explore many corners in peace. Those primarily seeking atmosphere, photo opportunities, and a relaxing stroll will often find it more appealing then than during the busiest months.

The choice of accommodation also makes a difference. Small houses with historical character fit well in this area. If you're only staying for one night while passing through, a convenient location and easy access are often more important than particularly atmospheric details.

How to plan your trip and stay in Krumau

For a more environmentally friendly way to travel to Český Krumlov, train and bus connections are options. Those who prefer flexibility or want to combine Krumlov with other destinations in South Bohemia will find a car a good choice. We ourselves traveled by car because we were in Frymburk have stayed overnight.

If you're planning a visit to Český Krumlov as part of a longer trip, it's worth considering whether you just want to make a stopover or intentionally spend an overnight stay. This often determines the best mode of transport. For a more leisurely journey with several stops, a car is practical. For a more focused visit, traveling by train and bus can also work well.

From Passau, you can reach Český Krumlov by car in just over two hours. This makes it a good place for a side trip to South Bohemia. However, your stay will be more enjoyable if you don't just squeeze Český Krumlov in between other activities, but instead give the town some time to explore.
