Hotel am Großglockner - the Hotel Kärntnerhof in Heiligenblut

On the way to the Hotel Kärntnerhof in Holy blood you can cross the Hohe Tauern. We got on one of the scenic roads Austria crosses the Hohe Tauern. On the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Although this road connection between the Salzburger Land and Carinthia is only 48 kilometers long, it offers views, museums and mountain huts that invite you to have a snack that you should plan a day for.

Arrival from Munich

We traveled from Munich and had a day to look at the places along this route. In the evening we were happy to have reserved a room in a hotel on the Grossglockner, the Hotel Kärntnerhof in Heiligenblut. This is only a few kilometers away from the toll station of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. The impressions, the sun and the air ensured that we arrived there happy, but also tired from our tour on the panorama road over the Hohe Tauern.

Hotel am Grossglockner - feel good at the Kärntnerhof in Heiligenblut

After our road trip over the Hohe Tauern, we look forward to our overnight stay in the 50 plus hotel Kärntnerhof in the Winkl district of Heiligenblut. The hotel is easy to reach from the access road to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. We drive through the center of Heiligenblut down into the valley. That's where the hotel is. We spend two nights here, away from the city center of Heiligenblut and from the traffic of the panorama road. The Fleißner family, who have been running the hotel since the 60s, welcomes us. We immediately feel at home when we are greeted by the hotel owners, Helga and Marietta Fleißner.

The room at the Kärntnerhof, the Hotel am Großglockner

The room is furnished in a country house style. It offers space for a desk, a sitting area and an armchair. The balcony is large and extends around two sides of our room. We have a table with four chairs and two deck chairs. What we like best is the canopy that hangs over the bed, and its colors complement those of the curtains and upholstered furniture.

A country-style hotel

The Hotel Kärntnerhof are furnished with taste. I like the chair covers in the dining room, the country-style lamps that convey comfort for a hotel on the Großglockner. We were impressed by the panorama pool, from which one has an all-round view of the surroundings. Those who want to recover from hikes in the evening can do so in the sauna.

Food for connoisseurs

The kitchen in this hotel on the Großglockner promises indulgence. On the first evening we decide on peach wrapped in bacon and noodle soup as a starter, liver with onions, apple and cranberries for the main course, and a quark cream as dessert. On the second evening there is shrimp cocktail and cauliflower cream soup for starters,

I choose pork fillet "Bernese style" with pear and cheese on herb cream, while Petar opts for the catfish "Steirer style". It is available poached with strips of vegetables and horseradish. For dessert there is pancakes with apricot jam. The kitchen in the Hotel Kärntnerhof cooks regionally, and we liked the food. We did without the salad from the buffet and the cheese board because the four courses were already plentiful.

We really liked the fact that we could go hiking right from the hotel. There is also a lot to discover in the vicinity of Heiligenblut. We decided to visit the gold rush village, which is outside of town. You can spend several days in this hotel to get to know the surroundings and the place.

If you intend to do this, you can use the Großglockner High Alpine Road free of charge if you stay seven nights or more. Upon arrival, the hotel will send you a confirmation of your stay. You present this at the toll station and receive the ticket for the passage on the panorama road. If you want to visit other points along the route later, you need the Kärnten Card, which you can get at the hotel. If you only spend two nights in a hotel in Heiligenblut, you pay less toll.
