"Welcome to the Posthotel, Ms. Fuchs - Mr. Fuchs," smiles the receptionist at the Posthotel Achenkirch and shakes our hands over the counter. And her colleagues follow, as if they have known us for years. This is our first time in this five-star hotel in Achenkirch am Achensee Austria. The Achensee is one of the Mountain lakes in Tyrol. "Oh, you already have your luggage with you?" The friendly young lady in a smart dirndl looks at us almost a little disappointed when she discovers the laptop trolley in Petar's hand. “You can drive your car straight into the hotel garage. Our concierge is waiting there and takes your luggage to your room. Then come back here to reception and we'll take care of everything else.” It's not often that we're greeted so warmly in a hotel. Hospitality at the Posthotel Achenkirch

After we have delivered our car – the concierge will park it – we fill out our registration form. Afterwards, the friendly young lady invites us to coffee and cake, "and of course a glass of sparkling wine" in the hotel's lounge. "Here you can get our lunchtime snack between 12:00 and 14:30 p.m. and our coffee and cake buffet between 15:00 and 17:00 p.m. every day." Both are included in our stay free of charge. She brings us the weekly program for the time of our stay and it shows that we can easily keep busy all week in this hotel.

The Posthotel Achenkirch takes care of its guests: during the two days of our stay we have the choice between a hike to the Hofalm, a visit to the wine cellar, a hotel tour, Ultraton information in the Atrium Spa, a horse-drawn carriage ride, introductory tennis with one of the pros of the Hotels, a type consultation with Christian from Haarwelt Huber, a golf safari or a lecture on traditional Chinese medicine in the Atrium Spa. And the housekeepers of the hotel offer to teach us the secrets of the different bed shapes so that they can also convey the flair of a five-star hotel in our own home.

It tastes good in Achenkirch at the Posthotel

When it comes to culinary delights, there is a lot on offer at Reiter's Posthotel in Achenkirch: on Sunday, the day of our arrival, we are welcomed with a festive seven-course gala dinner. There is also a wine list with wines selected by the hotel's sommeliers for each course. We love wine, but limit ourselves to ice wine at this feast, because we have not tasted Austrian ice wine before. For the main courses of our menu, we prefer a non-alcoholic drink that the hotel has created especially for summer: "Wiesel's", a citrus-fruity drink with fresh mint that is good for you and refreshes after a drive on a hot summer's day. And the ice wine? It perfectly complements our dessert with wild berries. A wonderful end to a great meal.

A Gault Millau toque for the restaurant in the Posthotel Achenkirch

After this feast, we can only agree with Gault Millau, who gave the restaurant a toque. Well deserved, in our opinion. During the week, things are not quite as festive at the Posthotel, but they are just as delicious: guests can get their own starters and desserts from the buffet (or have them served by the friendly service – depending on your taste). As on Sunday, we choose the main course from three offers and this is served. On the two evenings during the week that we are guests at the Posthotel, there are Austrian specialties once and Italian food on the second evening. A varied cuisine is guaranteed for every day of your stay.

A spa landscape that is second to none

The highlight in Reiter's Posthotel is the 6000 square meter wellness and spa area, which offers guests a variety of spa treatments, baths, massages, pools, saunas and wellness of the highest quality. I'm not surprised that the spa is showered with awards. To name just a few: In 2008, the lifestyle magazine Tattler voted the Posthotel one of the 100 best spa hotels in the world. In 2012 it won the Leading Spa Award. Of course we don't want to miss out on such a wellness temple. So let's first take a look at the range of facilities, pools, saunas and treatment rooms that make the spa treatments possible: from the oriental hammam and rasul to a ladies' lounge, to couple treatments and relaxation therapy from China and Asia everything possible.

A mixture of Alps and Asia

The house has with Mrs. Dr. Hu Ji, his specialist for acupuncture and therapeutic massage, as we know them from China. Shaolin monks visit the hotel again and again and offer their treatment methods to its guests. A monk from China helped design and accentuate the Sunken Temple at the heart of the spa area. This can not only be recognized by the Buddha statue, which watches over the entrance to the temple area in a rock niche.

What we like about the spa area is that, despite its size, you never have the feeling of being in a large room. Rather, the areas are designed in such a way that there are always corners and rooms in which the guest can relax from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A retreat for city dwellers who can relax in the tranquility of the Posthotel's spa area.

Pure enjoyment in the spa

We take advantage of the hotel's offer and enjoy a head massage with herbal extracts and oils by Gertraud Gruber, whose scent alone puts me in a state of calm. The movements in the neck, head, cheeks and face make me wish that half an hour never ends. Apparently other guests feel the same, because in the evening we meet a lady who gets into the elevator with us and raves about her experiences in the hotel's wellness area.

The Posthotel Achenkirch has been family-owned since 1918

It's no wonder that well-being has become the trademark of the Posthotel. We speak to Karl Christian Reiter, the managing director, who is now the fourth generation to run the hotel: "My great-grandparents took over the Posthotel in Achenkirch in 1918, and since then every generation has contributed to the development of the hotel. It was my parents who created the wellness area and we are now consistently expanding it. Our goal is to give our guests wellness and tranquility. That's why we decided to make this an adults-only hotel.” We are guests at the Posthotel during the high season, and the tranquility that this hotel exudes helps us relax in the two days we stay there , recover.

Find peace in the junior suite

The location of our junior suite, which is located in one of the back buildings of the hotel complex, ensures peace and quiet. We don't hear anything from cars or other noise. Our suite is furnished in Italian style with pictures of bowls and amphorae, walls that look like marble in beige and yellow. In the bath I feel like the Romans must have felt in their baths. Angels and putti look down on the bathtub from a ceiling painting. This fills up very quickly via a waterfall inflow. "You don't have to turn off the water when the tub is full," says our companion, who shows us our room. "It's an overflow bathtub, the water from which drains off automatically." Since we want to save water, we don't use the offer, but a water drain next to the bathtub confirms what our guide said. In addition to the bathtub, our bathroom has a shower. There is also a toilet and two sinks.

In the vicinity of the Posthotel Achenkirch in Austria you can go hiking

  • Good walking boots are required so that you can enjoy your tours.
  • A light  backpack is convenient in that you can take a jacket and a bottle of water with you. For longer hikes we recommend one backpack.
  • Other equipment for hikers  here.
  • An sun hat protects on the go, because you will be out in the sun a lot.
