Why the Posthotel Achenkirch is particularly well suited for winter wellness

Especially in winter, the Posthotel Achenkirch (advertisement) truly shines. Its adults-only focus ensures a tranquil atmosphere, untouched by holiday periods or family offers. Instead of winter sports, the emphasis here is on retreat – with structured daily routines, a spacious spa area, and ample space for relaxation.

Why adults-only works particularly well in winter

During the colder months, the rhythm of many trips changes. Shorter days, fewer outdoor activities, and more time spent in hotels intensify the desire for peace and quiet. Adults-only hotels provide a clear framework for this: spa areas without family interaction, structured daily routines, and an atmosphere designed for retreat rather than entertainment.

A guest at the Posthotel Achenkirch in Tyrol

“Welcome to the Posthotel, Mrs. Fuchs – Mr. Fuchs,” the receptionist at the Posthotel Achenkirch smiles at us and extends her hand across the counter. Her colleagues follow suit, as if they've known us for years. Yet this is our first time at this five-star hotel in Achenkirch on Lake Achensee. Austria.

Lake Achensee is one of the Mountain lakes in Tyrol“Oh, you already have your luggage with you?” The friendly young lady in the neat dirndl looks at us, almost a little disappointed, when she spots the laptop trolley in Petar’s hand.

"You can drive your car directly into the hotel garage. Our concierge will be waiting there and will take your luggage to your room. Please feel free to return to the reception desk afterwards, and we will take care of everything else." It's not often that we receive such a friendly welcome at a hotel.

Hospitality at the Posthotel Achenkirch

After dropping off our car – the concierge takes care of parking – we quickly fill out our registration form. Then the friendly young lady invites us to the hotel lounge for coffee and cake, "and of course a glass of sparkling wine."

"Here you can enjoy our midday snack every day between 12:00 and 14:30 and our coffee and cake buffet between 15:00 and 17:00." Both are included free of charge in your stay.

She brings us the weekly program for the duration of our stay, and it turns out that we can be kept busy all week long at this hotel.

Wide range of activities

At the Posthotel Achenkirch, they really take care of their guests. During our two-day stay, we had a choice of activities, including a hike to the Hofalm, a wine cellar tour, or a hotel tour.

Other options include an Ultraton information session in the Atrium Spa, a horse-drawn carriage ride, a taster session of tennis with one of the hotel's pros, a style consultation with Christian from Haarwelt Huber, a golf safari, or a lecture on Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Atrium Spa.

The hotel's housekeepers also offer to teach us the secrets of the different bed styles, so that we can recreate the ambiance of a five-star hotel in our own homes.

It tastes good in Achenkirch at the Posthotel

As far as culinary delights are concerned, Reiter's Posthotel in Achenkirch offers a great deal: On Sunday, the day of our arrival, we were welcomed with a festive seven-course gala dinner. A wine list was also available, featuring wines selected by the hotel's sommeliers to accompany each course.

We love wine, but for this feast we are limiting ourselves to ice wine, as we have not yet tasted Austrian ice wine.

Instead, we prefer to accompany the main courses of our menu with a non-alcoholic drink that the hotel has created especially for the summer: the “Wiesel’s”, a citrusy drink with fresh mint that is refreshing and soothing after a drive on a hot summer day.

And the ice wine? It perfectly complements our dessert with wild berries. A wonderful end to a great meal.

Gault-Millau toque for the restaurant at the Posthotel Achenkirch

After this feast, we can only agree with Gault Millau, who awarded the restaurant a toque. Well deserved, in our opinion.

During the week, the atmosphere at the Posthotel is less festive, but just as delicious: Guests can help themselves to appetizers and desserts from the buffet (or have them served by the friendly staff – whichever they prefer). As on Sundays, we choose our main course from three options, and this is then served.

Austrian and Italian specialties

On both evenings during the week that we are staying at the Posthotel, Austrian specialties are served on one evening and Italian food on the other. This guarantees a varied culinary experience every day of our stay.

A spa landscape that is second to none

The highlight of Reiter's Posthotel is the 6000 square meter wellness and spa area, which offers guests a variety of spa treatments, baths, massages, pools, saunas and wellness of the highest quality.

This spa area truly comes into its own during the winter months. While outside, crisp, cold air and short days dictate the rhythm of life, many guests consciously spend long hours here in the warmth – without time pressure, without an activity program, simply enveloped by peace and warmth.

It doesn't surprise me that the spa has been showered with awards. To name just a few: In 2008, the lifestyle magazine Tattler named the Posthotel one of the 100 best spa hotels in the world. In 2012, it won the Leading Spa Award.

A wellness temple that impresses

We certainly don't want to miss out on such a wellness temple. Therefore, we'll first take a look at the range of facilities, pools, saunas, and treatment rooms that make the spa treatments possible.

From a hammam like in the Orient and a rasul to a ladies' lounge, couples' treatments and relaxation therapy from China and Asia, everything is possible.

A blend of Alpine and Asian influences

The hotel boasts Dr. Hu Ji, a specialist in acupuncture and therapeutic massage, as practiced in China. Shaolin monks regularly visit the hotel and offer their treatments to guests.

A monk from China contributed to the development of the Sunken Temple in the heart of the spa area, leaving his mark on it. This is evident not only in the Buddha statue that watches over the entrance to the temple area from a rock niche.

Many nooks and small rooms in the spa

What we particularly like about the spa area is that, despite its size, you never feel like you're in one large room. Instead, the areas are designed in such a way that there are always nooks and crannies where guests can relax and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

A retreat for city dwellers who can relax in the tranquility of the Posthotel's spa area.

For whom is the Posthotel Achenkirch particularly suitable?

  • Adults-only wellness, not family-run
  • Huge spa area with an Asian focus
  • Clear daily structure, plenty of peace and quiet, little distraction
  • Ideal for 2-5 nights or a conscious break

If that's exactly what you're looking for, it's worth taking a look at the current availability.

Pure enjoyment in the spa

We take advantage of the hotel's offer and enjoy a head massage with herbal extracts and oils from Gertraud Gruber, the scent of which alone puts me in a state of tranquility. The movements on my neck, head, cheeks, and face make me wish that half hour would never end.

Apparently other guests feel the same way, because in the evening we meet a lady who gets into the elevator with us and raves about her experiences in the hotel's wellness area.

Family owned since 1918

It's no wonder that well-being has become the hallmark of the Posthotel.

We speak with Karl Christian Reiter, the managing director who is already the fourth generation to run the hotel:

“My great-grandparents took over the Posthotel in Achenkirch in 1918, and since then every generation has contributed to the hotel's development. My parents were the ones who created the wellness area, and we are now consistently expanding it. Our goal is to offer our guests wellness and relaxation. That's why we decided to make this an adults-only hotel.”

We are staying at the Posthotel during the high season, and the tranquility that this hotel exudes helps us to relax during the two days we spend there.

Find peace in the junior suite

The location of our junior suite, situated in one of the rear buildings of the hotel complex, ensures peace and quiet. We hear nothing from cars or other noise.

This location is particularly advantageous during the winter months. Short distances, muffled noises, and a clearly structured daily routine ensure that sleep and relaxation are not interrupted – even when there is snow outside or the weather is harsher.

Our suite is decorated in the style of Italy, with pictures of bowls and amphorae, and room walls that look like marble, in beige and yellow.

Ceiling paintings and waterfall in the bathtub

In the bathroom, I feel as the Romans must have felt in their baths. Angels and cherubs gaze down at the bathtub from a ceiling painting.

It fills rapidly via a waterfall inlet. "You don't need to turn off the water when the tub is full," says our guide, who is showing us to our room. "It's an overflow bathtub, so the water drains automatically."

Since we want to conserve water, we don't use the service, but a drain next to the bathtub confirms our guide's statement. Besides the bathtub, our bathroom has a shower. There's also a toilet and two sinks.
