Rothenburg ob der Tauber on the Romantic Road

Medieval towns, vast landscapes, and fairytale castles – the Romantic Road is much more than just a tourist route. We have explored it extensively over several trips, sometimes on our own, sometimes on invitation as travel bloggers for research. We were able to leave everyday life behind and experience history with every step. Time and again, we met welcoming people, sampled regional delicacies, and experienced what slowing down really tastes like.

What makes the Romantic Road special?

The approximately 400-kilometer route connects Würzburg in Franconia with Füssen in the Allgäu region. What we particularly remember is the warmth of the evening sun basking over Würzburg's vineyards as we enjoyed the view of the Baroque Residenz palace with a glass of Franconian Silvaner—a moment of pure joie de vivre.

In Dinkelsbühl, we were particularly fascinated by the magic of the medieval alleys. As we strolled along the well-preserved city walls, we felt as if we were in the middle of a fairytale. It's worth taking a slow, deliberate stroll here, visiting the small cafés, and simply soaking up the town's charm.

Augsburg impressed us with its exciting blend of Renaissance splendor and Roman history. As we strolled through the narrow streets of the Fuggerei, the oldest social housing project in the world, we felt a deep connection to history—a unique experience that will remain with us forever.

In Füssen, we visited the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle, arguably the most famous castle in Germany. Even the view from a distance was breathtaking, but the interiors, with their magnificent furnishings, truly immersed us in another world—a perfect conclusion to our journey along the Romantic Road.
