A spa holiday in Styria with indulgence and wine

Most people go to Loipersdorf for the thermal baths. That was the case for us too. But it wasn't until we arrived that we realized a stay in this corner of Styria quickly becomes more than just a few relaxing hours in the warm water. Vineyards, traditional wine taverns, and excursion destinations surround the town, making it perfect for a long weekend. Especially if you don't just want to swim and then head straight home, Loipersdorf reveals a different side. We'll show you here what a spa holiday in Styria has to offer.

A spa holiday in Styria: it's nothing without a visit to a traditional wine tavern.

We particularly remember an evening spent above the thermal baths. The hotel director of the Hotels Vier Jahreszeiten Loipersdorf He had invited us to his parents' wine tavern. The house is situated on a vineyard. A large wine press stands in front of the tavern, and from there you have a direct view down to the thermal baths and the hotel. Down below, it gradually becomes quieter, while upstairs, glasses clink on the tables, and Austrian specialties are served from the kitchen. In this gathering with the hotel director and the other travel bloggers, it quickly became clear why Loipersdorf has more to offer than just a quick visit to the thermal baths.

On the table were regional wines and a traditional snack, typical of the area. This included bread, spreads, ham, scarlet runner beans, and pumpkin seed oil – precisely the flavors one associates with southeastern Styria. Evenings like these aren't memorable because of a single dish. It's more the interplay of the view, the taste, and the atmosphere. Before you, the slopes of the vineyard; below, the thermal baths in the valley; and a glass of wine in your hand. It's then, if not before, that you realize this trip is about more than just the spa.

Why Loipersdorf is more than just a spa resort

Many people go to a spa town, spend the day at the resort, and hardly see anything of the surrounding area. In Loipersdorf, that would almost be a shame. Just a few minutes away, vineyards, small roads, and paths begin, where it becomes quieter. The landscape is soft, expansive, and pleasantly unhurried. This is precisely what makes it perfect for a weekend when you don't feel the need to be constantly doing something.

Those staying here for a few days can easily combine their visit with other experiences. A walk above the thermal baths is just as much a part of it as a trip into the surrounding area. On other trips, we've seen how well destinations like Riegersburg, Gölles, Vulcano, and Zotter can be combined with a stay in this region. In Riegersburg, the location is particularly memorable. At Gölles, we saw how vinegar is made and how much care goes into each step. At Vulcano, it became clear that good ham isn't simply a product, but the result of time, craftsmanship, and experience. And at Zotter, you don't just taste chocolate; you immerse yourself in a world where indulgence sparks curiosity.

It is precisely this combination that gives Loipersdorf its charm. You come for relaxation and also find a region that tastes of wine, ham, vinegar, chocolate and pumpkin seed oil.

Who Loipersdorf is a good fit for

Loipersdorf is a great destination for couples, gourmets, and anyone who wants to do more than just lounge around in their bathrobe. If you enjoy warmth, good food, and the occasional excursion into nature, you'll find plenty of options here without feeling overwhelmed by a packed schedule.

This location is less suitable for people who desire a very small, almost secluded spa resort. The complex is large, and the range of services is extensive. This offers a great deal of comfort, but also reflects the character of the place. Therefore, it's all the more important to consider how you want to stay and what is truly important to you during your stay.

The choice of hotel makes a noticeable difference here.

In Loipersdorf, it's not just the thermal baths that determine your stay. Where you stay is just as important. A house right next to the spa significantly changes your experience, especially if you value convenience and short distances.

The Hotel Four Seasons Loipersdorf This is a good example. Its proximity to the thermal baths allows for more flexible scheduling. You don't have to organize anything, you can retreat for a while and then head out again later. Especially during a short break, you quickly realize how pleasant this is. It's not about cramming as much as possible into a few hours. What's much more important is that there's no restlessness.

Southeast Styria: a region that looks and tastes like pure enjoyment.

What we like about this region is its down-to-earth nature. Much of it doesn't seem staged for visitors, but simply belongs there. Wine isn't grown here just for the view; it's part of everyday life. The same is true for many products that are familiar from southeastern Styria.

Scarlet runner beans here don't taste like a side dish you just eat on the side. Pumpkin seed oil is more than just a drop on the salad. When we visited Gölles, it became clear how meticulously they work. At Vulcano, we saw where the ham is produced and what goes into it. Zotter, in turn, is one of those places where you realize how playful enjoyment can be without becoming mundane.

Then there's the scenery. Even a short walk above the thermal baths is often enough to clear your head. The atmosphere changes quickly among the vineyards, fields, and farms. Below is the spa; above, the landscape opens up. It's precisely this change that makes a stay in Loipersdorf so pleasant.

Things you can do besides the thermal baths

No one needs to make a detailed plan in Loipersdorf. That's precisely what makes it so pleasant. Often, it's enough to simply remain open to what's nearby. A walk through the vineyards, a view across the hills, a late afternoon in a wine tavern, or a trip to Riegersburg will fill the day all by themselves.

Those who enjoy walking will find many quiet paths around Loipersdorf. Even above the thermal baths, the atmosphere changes. It becomes quieter among the vineyards and fields, and with a little distance from the spa, the area feels even more expansive. Such short walks don't need a grand destination. Often, the journey itself is enough.

In addition, there are excursion destinations that are a perfect fit for a stay. Riegersburg is not far away and is worth a visit for its location alone. A visit to Gölles, Vulcano, or Zotter also complements the trip well, as these places offer a direct connection between culinary delights and regional specialties. This transforms a wellness weekend into a trip where relaxation and adventure are not mutually exclusive.

How many nights are worthwhile for a spa holiday in Styria

For Loipersdorf, we would recommend two or three nights rather than just one. If you stay longer, you won't have to constantly make decisions. Then you'll have time for the thermal baths, a relaxing evening, and a short trip to the surrounding area.

With only one overnight stay, things feel more cramped. Of course, you can still switch off. But the place reveals its more pleasant side when there's a little more breathing room. Only then does a short break from everyday life become a true getaway.

Is Loipersdorf worth a visit for your wellness weekend?

Loipersdorf is a good choice if you're looking for a thermal spa but don't want to spend the whole weekend indoors. Anyone who enjoys being outdoors after swimming, appreciates regional cuisine, and knows how to savor a glass of wine with a view will likely feel right at home here.

Another location might be more suitable if you're looking for something very small and secluded. Loipersdorf thrives on the combination of thermal baths, scenery, and culinary delights. It's precisely this mix that makes for a memorable stay.

What will be remembered most about Loipersdorf

What we remember most is that evening at the vineyard. The large wine press in front of the house. The wine tavern above the thermal baths. The view down to the hotel. And all of this accompanied by regional wine and specialties that were perfectly suited to the setting. It was clear at that moment, if not before, that a spa holiday in Styria at this location could be so much more than just a relaxing soak in the warm water.

What we also love about Loipersdorf is the tranquil way in which the place unfolds. Nothing is forced or intrusive. Instead, many impressions arise almost incidentally. A view across the hills while walking, a glass of wine on a terrace, a conversation over dinner, or the aroma of pumpkin seed oil and fresh bread in a traditional wine tavern often lingers in the memory longer than any single planned activity. This is precisely why the region doesn't feel cluttered, but pleasantly authentic.
