Where we have stayed so far on Texel
We stayed in different places on Texel: in Den Burg, at the Boutique Hotel Texel in the countryside, and in a holiday apartment near Den Hoorn. Each location felt different. Den Burg was convenient for the start of our trip. The Boutique Hotel Texel was quiet, but not in a town. The holiday apartment near Den Hoorn brought us closer to the dunes, fields, and the quieter side of the island.
For us, the most important question isn't whether an accommodation is nicely furnished. What's far more important is its location. On Texel, the location determines whether you can quickly pop to the bakery in the morning, walk to dinner in the evening, cycle there, or have to get in the car first.
Our recommendation based on length of stay
How long you stay on Texel significantly influences your choice of location. For one or two nights, I wouldn't recommend staying too remotely. Den Burg, De Koog, or Oudeschild are practical because you can easily combine restaurants, trails, and day trips. For a short stay, it's worthwhile to choose a location where you don't have to travel far in the evenings.
If you're staying three or four nights, you'll have more flexibility. In that case, a central or well-connected location can be advantageous. From Den Burg, you can easily reach many places, while De Koog is particularly suitable if proximity to the beach is important. Oudeschild is ideal if you want to combine a harbor atmosphere with dining out.
For five to seven days, you can choose a quieter location for your accommodation. A holiday home or apartment outside the busier towns is a good option. You'll have plenty of time to plan your journeys by bike or car more easily. Especially during a week on Texel, the appeal often lies not just in short distances, but in the repetition: picking up bread rolls in the morning, spending the day at the beach, and returning to a more tranquil setting in the evening.
If you're staying longer than a week, I would pay particular attention to practicality. Shopping facilities, bike paths, parking, and restaurants within easy reach become more important than a single beautiful view. For longer stays, vacation homes or apartments are usually a better fit than a traditional hotel, especially if you plan to cook for yourself or explore different parts of the island at your own pace.
Where to stay on Texel? Quick decision based on location
Texel isn't large. Nevertheless, the towns are quite distinct. Den Burg is centrally located and convenient. De Koog is closer to the beach. De Cocksdorp is a better fit if you prefer the north of the island. Oudeschild takes you to the harbor. Things are quieter in the countryside, but you'll need a bit more planning.

For a longer holiday on Texel, we would prefer to stay in the countryside, in a holiday home area, or in a smaller town. We would take a closer look at Oudeschild, De Waal, and Den Hoorn next time. Den Burg remains a good starting point for us. However, for a whole week, we would prefer quieter accommodation.

Den Burg: arrive safely and first understand Texel
Den Burg isn't located on the coast. Nevertheless, it's a good starting point for many trips to Texel. Here you'll find shops, cafes, restaurants, and the tourist information office. This is especially convenient after arrival. You can get answers to your questions, pick up maps, find out about excursions, and quickly get a feel for how the island is laid out.
We especially appreciated Den Burg at the beginning of our trips to Texel. After the ferry or a long day of travel, it's convenient not having to search for shops or restaurants. The town takes some of the pressure off the first day.
For a longer stay, Den Burg wouldn't be our first choice. We miss the proximity to dunes, fields, and the sea. It's precisely this landscape that makes Texel so special for us. Nevertheless, Den Burg is a good fit if it's your first time on the island, you're only staying for a short time, or you prefer to stay in a central location.

De Koog: close to the beach and probably livelier
De Koog is one of the most popular holiday resorts on Texel. It lies close to the west coast, where beach, dunes, hotels, holiday apartments, and restaurants are more densely packed than in many other parts of the island.
We haven't stayed overnight in De Koog yet, so we're cautious in our assessment. For us personally, De Koog wouldn't automatically be our first choice, as we're looking for peace and quiet on Texel. A beach resort with many accommodations can be more lively during peak season than a farm in the countryside or a holiday apartment outside of town.
That doesn't mean De Koog isn't suitable, though. If you want short distances to the sea, like having options in the evenings, and don't want to travel far, De Koog can be very convenient. If you'd prefer a quieter Texel experience, you should take a closer look at the location of your accommodation and how busy it is during your travel dates.

De Cocksdorp: North, nature and holiday parks
De Cocksdorp is located in the north of Texel. The town is interesting if you're interested in the northern tip of the island, its beaches, dunes, and natural surroundings. We were particularly impressed by De Cocksdorp's holiday parks, its proximity to the beach, and its connection to nature.
The north feels different from Den Burg or Oudeschild. There's more open space and less of a sense of place. Anyone vacationing here should enjoy nature and quiet paths. At the same time, a lot depends on the accommodation. A holiday park can be comfortable, but it isn't necessarily quiet.
It can get quite lively there, especially during school holidays, particularly when many families with children are traveling. We haven't stayed in a holiday park on Texel ourselves, so we wouldn't want to make a definitive judgment. Those seeking peace and quiet should pay close attention to the location, size, and travel time of holiday parks.

Oudeschild: Harbor, fish and a different view of Texel
We particularly liked Oudeschild on Texel. The town isn't located on the open North Sea, but on the Wadden Sea side. This gives it a different feel than the towns on the west coast. Here, the focus is more on the harbor, fishing, boats, and the view of the water.
It's precisely this mix that makes Oudeschild so appealing to us. You can stroll along the harbor, enjoy fresh fish, plan excursions, or explore the surrounding area. The fortifications are also nearby. And if you have the time, you can get a good look at the water system in the polder landscape from here as well.
Oudeschild would be an interesting place for us to stay again. Not because the town offers everything, but because it has its own unique Texel character. Those who stay there experience the island not only through its beaches and dunes, but also through its harbor, mudflats, polders, and fishing industry.
In Oudeschild, I would check if you can walk to dinner in the evening.*

Where to stay on Texel if you're looking for peace and quiet?
Texel reveals its beauty to us when you not only travel from place to place, but also take in the journeys between them. This is easier if your accommodation is located outside the larger towns. In the countryside, it's often quieter. You see more sky, more fields, more sheep, and you notice more clearly how closely dunes, wind, and pastures are intertwined on Texel.
Our holiday apartment near Den Hoorn was located in the countryside and not far from the dunes. This was a great combination for us. We could easily explore the island and retreat to our own space in the evenings. The Boutique Hotel Texel was also situated in a quiet rural location. Its location was pleasant, although not directly in a town.
The Boutique Hotel Texel has its own good restaurant. We had a great meal there. Especially during peak season, you should make a reservation if you want to eat there, as the restaurant is popular. This is particularly convenient if you're staying in a quiet location and don't want to drive in the evening.
If you're looking for peace and quiet, accommodation outside of towns is often a good choice. A farm, a holiday apartment, or a holiday home on the edge of the dunes can be particularly suitable. However, it's important to be realistic: how quiet it actually is depends on the season, the neighbors, and the specific accommodation. A holiday park can be practical for families, but it can also get quite lively during peak season. We'd need to test it ourselves before we can say more.

De Waal, Den Hoorn and Oosterend: smaller towns with more of an island feel
Besides the well-known resorts, smaller villages are also worth exploring. De Waal, Den Hoorn, and Oosterend are less typical for a classic beach holiday. Instead, you'll find a stronger village atmosphere and often a more peaceful environment.
We really enjoyed Den Hoorn. Located in the south of the island, it combines village charm with a beautiful landscape and a great base for excursions. Our holiday apartment was in the countryside near Den Hoorn, making the dunes and trails easily accessible. This was exactly the kind of mix we liked: not completely isolated, but not right in the middle of the hustle and bustle either.
We'd like to take a closer look at De Waal next time. The place seems smaller and quieter. Oosterend can also be interesting if you want to get to know Texel more through its villages, paths, and everyday locations. These kinds of places aren't for everyone. But those who prefer a slower pace of travel often find more of the Texel there that isn't immediately visible in every holiday photo.
Hotel, holiday home, holiday park or B&B
It's not just the location that matters. The type of accommodation also changes your holiday. A centrally located hotel feels different than a holiday apartment on a farm. A holiday park has different advantages than a small B&B. That's why it's worth considering the location and accommodation together.
Hotel on Texel
A hotel is a good choice if you're only staying for a few days, don't want to cook for yourself, and don't want to plan much. Den Burg, De Koog, Oudeschild, or a quiet country hotel could be suitable, depending on your trip. A hotel in Den Burg was convenient for us to start our vacation. For the entire trip, we would prefer a quieter location.
The Boutique Hotel Texel was a good choice for us because it was in a quiet location and had a good restaurant on site. This is especially convenient if you don't want to drive every evening. During peak season, you should make a reservation at the restaurant.
Holiday home or holiday apartment on Texel
A holiday home or apartment is a good choice if you're staying longer, want more space, and prefer to plan your own day. Especially in the countryside or near the dunes, your holiday quickly becomes more peaceful. For us, a holiday apartment has always been the best option when scenery and relaxation were more important than being close to town.

Those traveling with a tent, caravan, or motorhome should check how sheltered the site is, how far it is from the beach, town, or cycle paths, and whether the site is suitable for your travel dates.
By car, bike or bus: What does that mean for your accommodation?
On Texel you can get around by car, bike or bus. Which option suits you best depends on how long you're staying and where you're staying.
For a short stay, a bicycle limits you to a smaller area. This can be nice if you want to travel at a leisurely pace. However, it can also mean you miss some places. It's similar with buses. You have to factor in waiting times and connections. Especially if you're staying outside the town center, you should check how far away the nearest bus stop is beforehand.
Traveling by car offers more flexibility. This is especially convenient for short vacation days or when staying in a rural area. For longer stays, we find a combination of options works best: renting a bike for a few days to explore the area around your accommodation, and using the car for longer trips to more distant locations. This is also possible by bus, provided the connection to your accommodation is convenient.
Without a car on Texel
Without a car, I would recommend staying in a central location on Texel or choosing accommodation with good bus and bike connections. Den Burg, De Koog, or a location that's easily accessible are then easier than a remote farm. If you're staying longer, you can take your time. Cycling will also become more relaxed as a means of transport.
Driving to Texel
Having a car allows for a more peaceful stay and also makes better use of accommodation in the countryside. You can reach the beach, the harbor, farm shops, or smaller towns more quickly. However, especially during peak season, you should consider parking and ferry schedules.

Which location would we choose next time?
If we travel to Texel again, we would look at the location first and only then at the accommodation itself. A holiday home area appeals to us because you can stay longer and have more space. Oudeschild would be interesting because of the harbor, the fish, and the variety. We would also take a closer look at De Waal and Den Hoorn again, because smaller towns suit our style of travel well.
We would still choose Burg as our starting point. It's convenient for the first few nights, arrival, tourist information, and getting around. However, for a longer holiday, we prefer the countryside, something near the dunes, or a place with more character. We haven't yet had the chance to comment on De Koog from personal experience. Therefore, it remains a practical choice for us, but one we haven't personally visited.
