Bad Waldsee in the Allgäu

We are invited to Bad Waldsee in the land of the Drumlins in the Swabian Alpine foothills, in an area where we have always passed by on our way to the Bodensee, which is less than an hour away when driving on country roads. This time we want to take a closer look at the area north of the lake and turn south from Memmingen to the west. The journey takes us up and down hills through a rural region with many individually standing hamlets and small villages that hide in protected valleys. A sign points to the Upper Swabian Baroque Street, which we cross at Bad Wurzach and which we meet again in Bad Waldsee. "Good," I think. "It will be interesting." And so it is. Bad Waldsee in Baden-Württemberg owns with his Collegiate Church of St. Peter a real baroque piece of jewelry, no wonder, as it was "modernized" by the master of the baroque, by Dominikus Zimmermann in the baroque style.

What does Bad Waldsee offer?

But the place has more to offer. After our arrival, we sit down in one of the street cafes on the town square, enjoy a "mug" of cappuccino with raspberry cake and the view of the beautifully restored Gothic town hall and the surrounding half-timbered houses in the city center on the first warm spring day of the year. We later learn that the wealthy traders and citizens of the city once settled on the hill that separates two lakes: the city lake and the castle lake. The hill is one of the drumlins, some of which we have already crossed on the way from the highway: remains of the last ice age or more precisely the glacier debris left behind by the glaciers from the Alps as side and final moraine. The city's prosperity, which is still evident today in view of the historic magnificent buildings, was based on the trade in canvas and grain, which were mainly exported to Switzerland.

A stroll on the city lake

We take advantage of the nice weather and take a walk around the city lake, which always gives us new views of the city center with its church towers and city gates. The lake is the heart of the city because it gives it its quiet character. We listen to the sound of church bells, the lapping of the waves stirred up by the rowers on the lake and the cry of the geese flying over the water. We are accompanied on our tour by Walter Gschwind, the spa manager of the town of Bad Waldsee, who tells us that the water from the thermal baths is pumped up from a depth of 1800 meters and feeds the thermal springs on the outskirts of the town.

On our stroll through the town, we get to know the three powers that have always competed for dominance in Bad Waldsee and had ever more beautiful and magnificent buildings built: the town lords, the church and the princes of Waldburg-Wolfegg. The town square with the town hall on one side and the merchants' granary on the other, the collegiate church of St. Peter, part of a former Augustinian monastery, and the princely castle stand for the three competitors for supremacy in Bad Waldsee.

Church and city leaders still compete for their sheep today. The princely house of Waldburg-Wolfegg has now left their castle and now runs the golf course in Bad Waldsee, which is just outside the town. On the outskirts is also the Erwin Hymer Museum, where we go through the history of mobile travel: from the first caravans, which were once towed across the Alps to Italy, to the modern motorhomes, which now populate the streets of the whole world .

TravelWorldOnline has been online since 2001. Their topics are trips to Savor, wine tourism worldwide and slow travel. During her studies Monika Fuchs spent some time in North America, where she - partly together with Petar Fuchs - traveled to the USA and Canada and spent a research year in British Columbia. This intensified her thirst for knowledge, which she satisfied for 6 years as an adventure guide for Rotel Tours and then for 11 years as a tour guide for Studiosus Reisen around the world. She was constantly expanding her travel regions, but curiosity still gnawed at her: "What's beyond the horizon? What else is there to discover in this city? Which people are interesting here? What do they eat in this region?" As a freelance travel journalist (her articles have appeared in DIE ZEIT, 360° Canada, 360° USA, etc.), she is now looking for answers to these questions as a travel writer and travel blogger in many countries around the world. Petar Fuchs produces the videos on this blog as well as on YouTube. Monika Fuchs from TravelWorldOnline is among Germany's top 50 bloggers in 2021.
