The Quidi Vidi Brewery in St. John, Newfoundland

The Iceberg Beer from Newfoundland tastes good! I'm usually more of a wine drinker. But in Newfoundland I was taught otherwise, because there they have a beer that you won't find anywhere else in the world: the Iceberg Beer from the Quidi Vidi Brewery St. John's Newfoundland. Making beer from iceberg water is a great idea! The iceberg beer is so fizzy and tastes amazingly refreshing in the summer heat that I drank it with almost every meal on our trip through Newfoundland - with real pleasure. I can't say with certainty why I like this beer so much. At 4,5% ABV, it's a light and fresh beer that pairs well with the many seafood dishes found in Newfoundland. It flows smoothly down the throat and doesn't leave a bitter aftertaste like some beers do.

Is it because this beer is made from the cleanest water in the world? And that's not a slogan because the water used to make the mash is the oldest that our world has to offer: it comes from the icebergs that drift south along the Newfoundland coast every year. During the spring months, a specialist company does nothing else than drive out to the icebergs off the coast and there, in dangerous work, "harvest" the ice of the cold giants to deliver it to the brewery for beer production. The water that is extracted from it has an extremely low level of pollution - no wonder there were 25.000 to 30.000 years ago when the glaciers formed, from which the icebergs off Greenland erupt, but no pollution yet. If you melt the ice of the ice giants off the coast of Newfoundland, you get the purest water on earth. To ensure that they are really supplied with iceberg water, Quidi Vidi's brewers put every drop of the valuable water through its paces before it is used to make the iceberg beer.

In any case, during our trip through Newfoundland there was hardly any other drink for me than the tasty, light and cool Iceberg Beer. Sometimes fresh from the tap like here in the Quidi Vidi Brewery, which is located on a very attractive bay. For this reason alone, a trip to Quidi Vidi is worthwhile. You can get your beer in the in-house shop or try it in the "Tasting Room". But there is also beer in almost all restaurants - we only came across a restaurant in a remote region that did not have it - and to buy all supermarkets.

The Iceberg Beer is not to be confused, it is only bottled in dark blue glass bottles, which are sold in a six-pack over the counter. It tastes best fresh from the fridge or the cooler.

The Quidi Vidi Brewery produces besides Iceberg Beer a whole range of other beers, of which almost all are brewed according to the German Purity Law. That is, only hops, barley, malt and water are used for beer production. The only exceptions are the soft drinks and mixed drinks made from these beers, such as the cranberry beer. These are a matter of taste, but at least you should try them once.

    1. Hello Dirck,

I have added the address of the brewery to the article, but do not know if they send the beer to Germany. The best you ask there once.
