The Hohensalzburg Fortress Christmas market is an experience. Salzburg is a city that, with its historic old town, palaces and castles, is almost predestined to shine at Christmas. She does this in the truest sense of the word. There are quite a number of Christmas markets held in Advent transform the city into a sea of ​​lights with Christmas trees, garlands, illuminated stars and candles.

None of Salzburg's Christmas markets, however, is as contemplative as the Christmas market at Hohensalzburg Fortress. It's not as large as the others. However, with its wooden huts in the courtyard of Hohensalzburg Fortress, it conveys the spirit of Christmas better. It does so especially when brass bands play Christmas carols in front of the sculpture group on the side wall of the castle church.

It's not just us who are getting into the Christmas spirit. Other visitors to the Christmas market feel the same way. For example, the young couple next to us, who, caught up in the romantic atmosphere, are kissing profusely.

What is special about the Hohensalzburg Fortress Christmas Market

Maybe it's because the market is smaller than the others, or because it can only be reached via the fortress railway or a steep street. It's not as crowded as the other markets. There are also quieter corners where we can enjoy the Christmas tree in the center or the stars against the night sky all the more.

Families with children are baking cookies in the fortress bakery. We don't miss the opportunity and get to work ourselves. With the help of Katja and Moritz from Wellness-Bummler, Christina and Thomas from City, Sea, Country and Andreas from Travelwriticus Colorful cookie figures are created. We paint and bake them right there on site.

Our glass of mulled cider goes well with the fresh Lebkuchen (gingerbread) particularly good afterwards when we visited the Christmas market at Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Another highlight at the Hohensalzburg Fortress Christmas Market is the view of the old town. The fairy lights from Salzburg Christmas Market we can also see it well from above. The view of the Salzach and the other bank is wonderful.
