The best day trips from Vienna
Vienna is a city that you can explore for days - from the magnificent imperial buildings to the cozy coffee houses. But if you are here for longer, it is worth exploring the surrounding area as well. We did just that and were surprised at how many fantastic day trips are possible from Vienna. Whether you fancy an idyllic wine region, want to explore an impressive castle or just want to unwind in nature - there are countless options. Here are our absolute favorites for a perfect day trip!

The Wachau – Enjoyment and History along the Danube
If you are looking for a picturesque landscape with historical sites and first-class wine, then the Wachau a must. This UNESCO World Heritage region is only an hour away from Vienna and enchants with rolling vineyards, medieval towns and a breathtaking Danube backdrop. We opted for a boat trip from Krems to Melk Abbey - probably the most beautiful way to discover the Wachau. The Danube flows like a blue ribbon through the valley, past small villages, castle ruins and vineyards.
Dürnstein with its famous ruins, where Richard the Lionheart was once held prisoner, is a highlight. A stroll through the narrow streets, past blue baroque churches and traditional wine taverns, is definitely worth it. Melk impresses with its magnificent monastery, which towers high above the Danube. The golden decorations and the impressive library particularly fascinated us. And of course a wine tasting is a must - the Wachau Rieslings and Grüner Veltliner are among the best in the world!

Klosterneuburg – Baroque flair and wine culture
Just a stone’s throw from Vienna lies Klosterneuburg, a real insider tip for anyone who wants to combine culture and wine. The Klosterneuburg Abbey, which towers over the city, is almost reminiscent of the Escorial in Spain with its architecture. We found the treasury, which houses the famous Verdun Altar - a masterpiece of medieval goldsmithing - particularly impressive.
In addition to history, Klosterneuburg also has a long wine tradition. Did you know that the monastery operates one of the oldest wineries in Austria? A tour of the historic wine cellars is an experience in itself. Afterwards, you can enjoy regional wine in one of the cozy wine taverns - perfect for a relaxing afternoon. It is particularly beautiful here in autumn, when the vineyards glow in warm colors.

Castles and palaces for day trips from Vienna – Immerse yourself in the past
The area around Vienna is full of castles and palaces that tell stories from times gone by. One of our favorite castles is Kreuzenstein Castle. It sits on a hill and looks like it came straight out of a medieval film. The view over the Danube is fantastic!

If you prefer something a little more magnificent, you should visit Laxenburg Castle. The huge castle park with its romantic ponds and old trees is perfect for a stroll. Particularly worth seeing is the Franzensburg, a small, fairytale moated castle in the middle of the lake.
Another highlight is Liechtenstein Castle in the southern Vienna Woods. It may be small, but its towers and walls are incredibly charming. The view over the forests and hills of the Vienna Woods is particularly impressive.

Wine regions around Vienna – enjoyment for wine lovers
If you love good wine, you will love the regions around Vienna. The thermal region south of the city is famous for its strong white wines and cozy wine taverns. In places like Gumpoldskirchen or Baden you can not only taste excellent wines, but also stroll through the romantic cellar lanes.
The Weinviertel, a little further north, is a paradise for wine lovers. Poysdorf and Falkenstein are known for their quaint wine cellars and rolling hills. Here it feels a bit like time has stood still - perfect for a relaxing trip away from the crowds.
Of course, Vienna itself cannot be missed! The Viennese Heurigen culture is unique, and in Grinzing, Nussdorf or Stammersdorf you can try the famous Viennese Gemischter Satz in traditional wine taverns - ideally with a view of the city.

Only a few kilometers from Vienna lies the Vienna woods - a natural paradise that is perfect for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. We have done some of our most beautiful hikes here, especially in the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve. The rolling hills, dense forests and idyllic villages make this place a real retreat.
A cultural highlight in the Vienna Woods is the Stift HeiligenkreuzThe 12th century Cistercian abbey is not only architecturally impressive, but is also known for its Gregorian chants, which can be heard live here every day - a moment that gives you goosebumps! Close by is Mayerling, where the tragic story of Crown Prince Rudolf took place.

Questions and answers about day trips from Vienna
Which day trips from Vienna are particularly suitable for families with children?
If you are travelling with children, there are some destinations that are particularly exciting. Kreuzenstein Castle, for example, is a real highlight for little knight and princess fans. The imposing castle complex and the impressive bird of prey flight shows will make your eyes light up. Lainz Zoo in the Vienna Woods is also a great option. Here you can walk through the forest with the little ones and watch wild boars or deer. If you prefer something more interactive, the Familypark Märchenland in Rust on Lake Neusiedl is a great choice - Austria's largest amusement park with carousels, water games and climbing worlds.
Which excursion destinations are also attractive in winter?
Even in the cold season, you can take some exciting day trips from Vienna. Melk Abbey and Klosterneuburg Abbey also offer tours in winter, and the magnificent rooms have a special atmosphere, especially in the darker seasons. The Vienna Woods are also a good choice, especially when there is snow - then you can go for wonderful hikes through the wintry forests. If you fancy wellness, Baden near Vienna with its thermal baths is perfect for warming up on cold days. And if you are looking for winter romance: a ride on the Schneebergbahn takes you to a snowy mountain landscape with fantastic views.
How much time should I plan for each day trip?
This depends on the destination and your pace, of course. If you are going to the Wachau, you should definitely take a whole day, especially if you are planning a boat trip or a bike tour. Klosterneuburg can be easily explored in half a day, especially if you only plan to visit the monastery and a Heurigen. Half a day is often enough for the Vienna Woods, unless you want to go on extensive hikes or combine several places such as Heiligenkreuz and Mayerling. Castles such as Kreuzenstein or Liechtenstein can be visited in a few hours, while a day in a wine region such as the Thermenregion or the Weinviertel can be comfortably extended - especially if you enjoy the time at a Heurigen.
Can I do most day trips using public transport?
Yes, many destinations around Vienna are easily accessible by bus and train. For example, you can easily reach the Wachau by train to Krems or Melk and then take a boat or bus. Klosterneuburg is right on the S-Bahn line, so you can get there in just 15 minutes from Vienna city center. Baden near Vienna is also easy to reach with the Badner Bahn. For some castles or hikes in the Vienna Woods, however, it is more practical to have a car, as buses often run there infrequently. If you don't have a rental car, there are sometimes organized tours that take you to the most beautiful places.
What is the best day trip if I have limited time?
If you only have a few hours, Klosterneuburg is the perfect choice. It's so close to Vienna that you can get there in no time, but it feels like a completely different world - with historical treasures, impressive architecture and cozy wine bars. The Vienna Woods are also a great place for a short trip, especially if you just want to get out into nature. A short hike in the Lainzer Tiergarten or a walk around Liechtenstein Castle are ideal for half a day. And if you fancy a bit of a holiday feeling, then a detour to Grinzing or Stammersdorf is worth it - there you can get out of the city in just a few minutes and relax in a Heurigen with a glass of wine.
