The city of Evora is rich in history and culture. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts visitors from all over the world. But what makes Evora so special?

The history of Evora goes back a long way. It was inhabited even before the Romans. However, the Romans left impressive traces. The Roman temple, also called the Temple of Diana, is a testament to this time. It towers majestically over the city and is a reminder of its long history.

After the Romans came the Moors. They ruled Evora for nearly four centuries. Their presence can still be felt today, especially in architecture. Narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses characterize the cityscape.

In the 12th century, the Christians recaptured Evora. They built magnificent churches and monasteries. Evora Cathedral, one of the most important Gothic buildings in Portugal, dates from this period.

Evora flourished in the 16th century. It became the residence of kings. Magnificent palaces and patrician houses were built. The university was founded. Science and art flourished.

Today Evora is a living museum. Every street, every building tells a story. As a visitor, you dive into the past. You feel the spirit of the story. And you understand why Evora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

 

 

Our arrival from Lisbon to Evora

The Cathedral is one of the most important Gothic buildings in Portugal. Twelve apostles stand guard at the entrance to the church. However, there is not enough time for a visit.

 

 

The Roman temple of Evora

Instead, the dwindling evening light continues to drive us to the square, which immediately adjoins the cathedral. There is the Roman temple from the first century. This was created as a tribute to Emperor Augustus. We are lucky and can photograph the temple in the light of the setting sun. From the Mirador de Jardim Diana we watch as the sun illuminates the medieval palaces with the last light of the day. From the viewing terrace, we also have a view of the city below us.

 

 

 

Evora in Portugal - a melting pot of cultures

Evora, the UNESCO World Heritage in Portugal, is a melting pot of cultures. History and modernity merge here to create a unique experience. Evora's culture is deeply rooted in its history. The city was shaped by Romans, Moors and Christians. Each of these cultures has left its mark. You see it in the architecture, hear it in the music and taste it in the kitchen.

The historic old town is a living museum. Here you will find, for example, impressive buildings such as the Roman temple and the Cathedral of Evora. But the narrow streets and whitewashed houses also tell their stories.

However, the culture of Evora is not only anchored in the past. It is alive and dynamic. The city is a center for art and music. Therefore, there are regular festivals and events that fill the streets with life.

The Giraldo Square

As soon as the last rays of sunshine on the facades disappear, we turn back to the city. Therefore, we leisurely stroll back to Giraldo Square, The town square of Evora is surrounded by magnificent buildings from the 16. to 18. Century. Wrought iron balconies and azulejos give them a magnificent look. This fits the square with its cobblestones. His paving stones look like polished. On it restaurants set up tables. In the summer, these are sure to attract guests until late at night. In January, it is the passersby at temperatures around ten degrees but too cool. We prefer to enjoy the coffee in the restaurant.

 

 

Local cuisine in Evora in Portugal

The cuisine of Evora in Portugal is a feast for the senses. It is shaped by the history and culture of the Alentejo region. Here you will discover flavors that you will never forget. Start your culinary journey with a "Sopa de Cação", for example. This is a traditional cartilaginous shark soup. It's hearty, flavorful and incredibly delicious. Or try “Migas à Alentejana”. This is a dish made with bread, garlic and olive oil, often served with pork.

Main courses are often rustic and hearty. "Ensopado de Borrego", a lamb stew, is also a classic. The lamb is cooked slowly until tender and juicy. This is often accompanied by potatoes and fresh vegetables.

But save room for dessert! Evora is also famous for its sweets. "Pão de Rala", a sweet bread with egg yolk and cinnamon, is a must. Or try sericaia, a creamy custard often served with plums.

And don't forget to taste the local wine. The Alentejo is also known for its excellent wines. A glass of red wine is the perfect accompaniment to your meal.

Evora's cuisine is a journey of discovery. She is honest, down to earth and full of taste.

Our dinner at Café Alentejo

So let's not miss out on Evora's specialities. Just a few steps from the Giraldo Square away, is the Café Alentejo. They are already waiting for us there. We are trying fish specialties from the Alentejo here for the first time. The shark soup is also on our menu. one of the typical fish dishes of Portugal, Then we will taste different meat dishes from the Alentejo.

 

 

But above all, we get to know the hospitality of the Portuguese for the first time. There is also a Vino Tinto from the region. We drink a red wine from Paulo Laureano, made from Trincadeira, Aragonez and Alicante Bouschet grapes.

 

 

A curiosity: the Capela dos Ossos

Before the journey continues the next morning, there is still time to visit the Capela dos Ossos, the chapel of the bones. It is located in a side wing of the Igreja de São Francisco church. The chapel owes its name to the bones with which it is decorated. The chapel dates from the 16th century and dates back to the Counter-Reformation. The Franciscans wanted to encourage their fellow believers to reflect. The chapel was also intended to commemorate the transience of life. This is also the saying above the entrance: "Nós ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos“- We bones here are waiting for yours. Macabre? Definitely, but the chapel also encourages thinking.

The best time to go to Evora in Portugal

Evora, the UNESCO World Heritage in Portugal, is worth a visit at any time of the year. But some times are particularly attractive.

In spring, from March to June, Evora comes alive. The temperatures are pleasant, ideal for walks through the historic old town. The landscape is blossoming and the days are longer. It's a perfect time to quietly enjoy the beauty of Evora.

Summer, from July to September, is hot and dry. Temperatures can get high. But don't worry, Evora's narrow streets still offer shade and refreshment. Plus, the long summer evenings are perfect for sampling the local cuisine and experiencing the vibrant culture.

Autumn, from October to November, is a wonderful time to visit. Temperatures are milder and the city is less crowded. The harvest in the Alentejo is then in full swing. It is therefore a great opportunity to taste the local wines.

Winter, from December to February, is cool and calm. It's therefore the perfect time to experience Evora without the crowds. The historical buildings and the charming streets have a special atmosphere in the winter silence. We visited Evora in January and pretty much had the town to ourselves. A great experience!

Transport options from Lisbon to Evora

Evora, the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Portugal, is easily accessible from Lisbon. There are various transport options for this.

The fastest option is the car. The journey takes about 1,5 hours. You drive on the A2 and then on the A6. The roads are well maintained and the views are fantastic. But remember, there are tolls on the highways.

Another option is the bus*. The journey takes about 2 hours. Buses depart regularly from Sete Rios bus station in Lisbon. It's a convenient and inexpensive option as well.

You can also take the train*. The journey takes about 2 hours. Trains depart from Oriente train station in Lisbon. It's a relaxed way to travel. You can enjoy the scenery and look forward to your visit to Evora.

Another option is also a organized tour*. Many companies also offer day trips from Lisbon to Evora. They often include transportation, a guide, and admission to attractions.
