The Hotel Chateau Frontenac is one of the most famous Quebec City Attractions. We visit frequently on our travels Quebec. We particularly appreciate this city because of its well-preserved historic cityscape, its excellent cuisine and the many interesting places to discover there. One of them is the Chateau Frontenac, which sits like a castle on Cap Diamant above the St. Lawrence River, at the point where the river widens and flows around the Ile d'Orleans.
A visit to Chateau Frontenac has become a tradition for us and is part of every stay in Quebec. Not that we necessarily want to stay there overnight. No, we want to rather get to know new hotelsto introduce them to you. But to get a taste of the city's history, to immerse yourself in the traditional ambience of the hotel, to experience the flair of a grand hotel, there simply has to be time for that. And we always take them. And Chateau Frontenac delivers this every time.
Chateau Frontenac history
The Chateau Frontenac Hotel in Quebec City is a striking historic landmark that combines history, luxury and architecture. It was designed by architect Bruce Price and built by the Canadian Pacific Railway between 1892 and 1893. The hotel's château style, inspired by French castles, has led to it being recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada. Over the years, Château Frontenac has undergone expansions and renovations that have maintained its historic character and appearance.
The hotel has hosted numerous well-known guests, including kings, queens and other high-profile personalities. Among them were King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939 and Queen Elizabeth II at a later date. Personalities such as Princess Grace of Monaco and various political leaders have also been guests at the hotel. During the Second World War, Château Frontenac was the site of the Quebec Conferences, where important military decisions were made.
Château Frontenac is also known for its culinary offerings. It is home to several restaurants, including Le Champlain, known for its French and Quebec cuisine as well as its views of old Quebec.
Today the Château Frontenac is more than just a hotel. It symbolizes the rich history and culture of Quebec. - Royal visit (1939): King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited Château Frontenac, underlining the hotel's status as a royal residence outside of Europe.
- Quebec Conferences in the Second World War (1943 and 1944): The Château Frontenac hosted the Quebec Conferences, where important decisions on military strategy, including the planning of the Normandy invasion and the development of nuclear weapons, were made between US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill .
- Filming location for Alfred Hitchcock's film “I Confess” (1952): The château served as the backdrop for the film “I Confess”, which starred stars such as Montgomery Clift and Anne Baxter.
- Visit of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip (1952): During their first royal visit to Canada, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip stayed at Château Frontenac, continuing the hotel's long tradition of hosting royal guests.
- Hosted by numerous dignitaries and celebrities: Château Frontenac has welcomed an impressive list of guests over the years, including political leaders, members of the nobility and celebrities from various fields.
- Shamrock Summit (1985): The Château Frontenac was the venue for the “Shamrock Summit”, a meeting between US President Ronald Reagan and Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney to discuss important bilateral issues.

Architectural features of the Chateau Frontenac Hotel, Quebec
The Château Frontenac in Quebec City functions as both a hotel and an architectural highlight of the city. Developed by Bruce Price, it was built on behalf of the Canadian Pacific Railway from 1892 to 1893. It embodies the chateau style typical of Canada's railway hotels of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Inspired by the French castles of the Loire Valley, the design of the Château Frontenac Hotel in Quebec combines neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance elements. Its distinctive towers, steep gables and copper roof with its green patina are characteristic. The uneven structure and the different window shapes emphasize the picturesque appearance.

Our experiences at Chateau Frontenac
The Chateau Frontenac from the St. Lawrence River
The best way to see Chateau Frontenac is on a boat trip on the St. Lawrence River. The MV Louis Jolliet makes its daily rounds below the cliffs of Cap Diamant. It passes the port area of Quebec and turns to the Montmorency waterfallsto head back to town. There are many beautiful views of the Chateau Frontenac along the way. The boat leaves from Chouinard Pier in Quebec and offers a whole range of different boat tours on the St. Lawrence River, always with a view of Chateau Frontenac.
The Chateau Frontenac on the Place d'Armes
However, the chateau is not only worth seeing from the river. Particularly impressive is the Chateau Frontenac of Old Quebec when you are directly in front of the Place d'Armes. Towering over the central square of the Upper Town of Quebec, it stands out with its battlements and towers, and impresses with its size alone, which dominates the entire square. Quite a few tourists seeing this for the first time are overwhelmed by it and try to capture it from all perspectives on their camera.
Boutiques, galleries and shops in Chateau Frontenac
The luxury hotel is worth a visit, even if you do not stay there. On the ground floor are numerous shops and boutiques offering typical Canadian handicrafts. We always like to look at the Inuit works that are offered in various stores. There are also galleries displaying paintings by local artists, as in most Fairmont hotels in Canada. Since you can get a good overview of what is currently in the art of the region announced.
The elegance of a grand hotel in Chateau Frontenac
One floor up you reach the lobby area, which looks very elegant with its long, wood-panelled walls and ceilings. Lush floral decorations, boxwood in terracotta pots, heavy wooden tables made of precious wood and decorated with mosaic tiles adorn the long corridors and convey a touch of the “good old days”. Here you feel transported back to the times when the “white ships” transported the members of the American Haute Volée up the St. Lawrence River, and when Churchill, Roosevelt and other important representatives of the international political scene honored themselves in this hotel .
A bar with a great view in Chateau Frontenac
We like to get a taste of the world of American nobility ourselves. That's why we always choose the bar of the Chateau Frontenac for a break on our sightseeing tour of Quebec. From there you have a beautiful view of the St. Lawrence River. We also have a view of the island of Ile d'Orleans, which we enjoy in the pleasant atmosphere of the bar. There is also a small bistro with a self-service counter on the ground floor of the hotel. But we prefer the elegant atmosphere of the bar and the freshly mixed drinks Cocktails that are served there.
The great cocktails from the bartender at Chateau Frontenac are definitely tastier than the soft drinks in a self-service restaurant. They may be more expensive than drinks in the hotel bistro, but they make a visit to Chateau Frontenac special. In the bar of the luxury hotel you can get a taste of the life of elegant Quebec. We do this every time we are there.
