To the tulip blossom in Keukenhof Holland

From March to May, Keukenhof Holland is a veritable sea of ​​tulips, hyacinths and daffodils. That is why the spring bloom is in Keukenhof in Lisse so popular. We've been here twice and loved it. There are also beautiful spring gardens in other countries, as Noel in his report on Spring Gardens of the World shows. This year, however, we are taking a whole day to visit Keukenhof Netherlands on our trip to Flower corso in the Bollenstreek.

 

 

That's a good thing, because we'll be there shortly after the park opens. Therefore, we have the opportunity to see the park without the crowds that bring countless buses into the park throughout the day.

 

 

 

On the days of the flower parade, the number of visitors to Keukenhof also increased many times over. This year there were over 50.000 on the day of the flower parade. That is why special services are set up. On the evening of such visitor-intensive days, the Keukenhof even provides "bus search teams". These then help wandering passengers to find their bus again. Tulips are definitely addictive! We can sing a song about that too. However, this is not surprising given the variety of shapes and colors that breeders exhibit at Keukenhof.

 

Walk through the Keukenhof Holland

But we do not need a bus search squad. Instead, we set off to get to know Keukenhof better with Mieke. She is one of the park's guides who show visitors the park every year during the Tulip Months. As it turns out, that's necessary too. That is why we see many new corners of the park, which we had not discovered in the past year. Among them is, for example, the historic garden, where original tulips can be seen. This includes even European, but so inconspicuous that they are hardly noticeable in addition to the cultivated varieties of the park.

Who was Carolus Clusius?

This part of the park also has a statue of Carolus Clusius, an avid hobby botanist. It was once he who brought tulip bulbs from the Ottoman Empire to Europe. He worked as a doctor at the Viennese court and years later was appointed to the University of Leiden. So he brought the tulips back The Netherlands. In Leiden he also put the Hortus botanicus a garden for research purposes, located on the grounds of the University.

He doesn't really want to fit into the Tulip Sea. But it does exist: the Japanese garden at Keukenhof. Mieke leads us on winding paths under delicate maple leaves: "Actually, the most important color in a Japanese garden is green," she explains. Here, however, the maple trees provide shade and coolness to colorful groups of tulips. You can also feel a sense of calm here, which disappeared around noon in the rest of the Keukenhof.

 

By boat through the breeding fields in Keukenhof Holland

Therefore, after lunch at the windmill of the Keukenhof Holland, we transfer to one of the boats. They drive their passengers on the canals through the tulip fields. At the gates of the park and the exhibition grounds of the Keukenhof are some of the breeding fields on which the tulip bulbs are bred. Now the plants bloom and give the breeders the opportunity to sort out possible mutations. Therefore, they can provide buyers of onions exactly the color they order.

We can already see the tractors that are traveling in the fields. They cut off the flowers so that the power of the plant flows into the onion. Therefore, they become the bulbous tulip bulbs that we buy in the shop. In autumn, these are then harvested and shipped all over the world. Young offshoots that result from this will serve as onion bulbs for the onion cultivation in the coming year.
