Do you know that feeling when the morning is still cool, but the sun is already pushing through the mountains and the alpine pastures are glowing golden? That's exactly what we love about summer in the Allgäu. This region has welcomed us many times – with fresh mountain air, authentic cheese, and hosts who make you feel like you've arrived. The last time we were there was on our trip to the neighboring Kleinwalsertal.

We'll show you what you can experience in the Allgäu during the warmer months – and where you can find the best hotels for your summer vacation.

Why the Allgäu won our hearts this summer

Summer in the Allgäu is quiet – but never boring. Instead of mass tourism, you'll find rustic mountain huts, small towns steeped in history, clear mountain lakes to immerse yourself in, and plenty of nature. It's a vacation for connoisseurs, hikers, families, and anyone who appreciates a slower pace of travel.

These regions are particularly worthwhile in summer

We have often been to the Allgäu region – and every corner has its own charm:

Oberallgäu

If you enjoy hiking, this is your area. In Oberstdorf or Balderschwang, you can set off, climb the peaks, or take the cable car up – and then enjoy the view. Afterwards, enjoy a cool drink on the hotel terrace? Treat yourself!

Ostallgäu

Castles, lakes, and pure romance. Lake Forggensee, with its view of Neuschwanstein, particularly impressed us in the summer—perfect for swimming, boating, or simply marveling.

West and Lower Allgäu

Things are more leisurely here. Ideal if you're looking for peace and quiet, want to cycle through the orchards, or relax in a spa hotel. We especially like the small towns, such as Bad Waldsee – authentic, warm and, above all, relaxing.

This is what you can experience in the Allgäu in summer

What we love about the Allgäu: It's so diverse. You can do something different every day—or simply nothing.

  • Hiking: Classics like the Breitachklamm or hidden alpine trails – whatever your mood takes.
  • Cycling: Riding an e-bike along the Iller – we tried it, it's wonderful.
  • Swimming: Our favorite lakes? The Große Alpsee and the Weißensee – cool, clear, and beautifully situated.
  • Family holidays: Summer toboggan runs, animals on the mountain pastures, shallow swimming lakes – ideal for holidays with children.

Enjoyment is part of it – regional, honest, good

A summer in the Allgäu region tastes of fresh herbs, tangy cheese, and homemade apple juice. Many hotels and inns serve produce directly from the farm—this isn't just marketing; it's everyday life here.

We like the small cheese dairies, the alpine huts with home-cooked food as well as the regional breweries – and yes, even the occasional hearty snack with a view.

…breakfast on the hotel terrace in Bad Hindelang – with a view of the morning mist over the valley.

…the hike up the Hochgrat – strenuous, but the sunset up there was worth every effort.

…a dip in the Alpsee after a hot summer day – that’s pure Allgäu feeling.
