These Portuguese seafarers moved slowly and cautiously south for fear of the dangers that traders from Arabia were spreading rumors about in order to deter this very competition from Europe.
It is comparable to well-known wilderness routes such as the Alaska Highway, the Top of the World Highway or the Dempster Highway in northwest Canada - the Freedom Road, which connects Baie Comeau in Quebec with Churchill Falls in Labrador.
