The Loisium wine experience world

During our visit to the Loisium Wine & Spa Resort in Langenlois in the Kamp Valley in Waldviertel in Lower Austria we had the opportunity to taste Grüner Veltliner and Riesling in the Kamptal:. Dinner at the hotel, a wine tasting in the Loisium wine world and a picnic in the vineyards above Langenlois give us the opportunity to do so. We learn a lot of interesting facts about the wines of this region and why they are among the best wines in Austria.

Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from Kamptal

Grüner Veltliner and Riesling in particular thrive particularly well in the Kamptal, a small side valley of the Danube south of Krems. As we cross the Danube on our way to the hotel, we immerse ourselves in a region that lives from wine. Petar is excited, because this world reminds him of the days of his youth, when his grandfather took him to the vineyard and he ate his fill of sweet grapes all day long, under which he lay on the grass and sheltered from the sun searched.

Once we have overcome the hills on the banks of the Danube, we look at vineyards and vineyards, which extend beyond the horizon. We are here in a wine region of superlatives: the place Langenlois boasts to be the largest wine town in Austria. However, Kamptal is one of the largest vineyards in the world, as it is larger than the wine regions of Styria and Vienna taken together.

In the spring, the vines are cut

It's the time when the vines are cut. Every year in July, the vintners go out into the vineyard and cut back the new shoots that sprout with the spring sun and show the power of the vines. If they do not, the growth of the plants takes the grapes the energy they need to produce enough yield and sweet wine. We will see that there will be a good harvest this year as we walk through the vineyards. The grapes are thick and dense on the vines. They promise a year of good wine.

The Kamptal is an ideal vineyard for Grüner Veltliner and Riesling

Why is Kamptal so well suited to wine growing? And why does Grüner Veltliner and Riesling grow so well here? We learn that during our visit to the Loisium Wine experience world LoisiumOn the one hand it is because Kamptal owns three different types of soil. Here, the vines grow on prehistoric rock, loess and clay. The loess sometimes reaches a depth of forty meters. This creates excellent conditions that help the wines in Kamptal to finesse and variety.

In addition, it is precisely here that two weather systems meet: the mild air from the Pannonian area ensures dry and hot weather during the day. Temperatures around the 30 degrees on summer days are common. If they rise above this, there are often thunderstorms in the evening, which occur when the hot air from the south meets the cooler temperatures from the neighboring Waldviertel. Then it cools off at night, and the wine has time to breathe. In this way he can save the spicy aromas that the bottom of Kamptal delivers. This provides excellent conditions in Kamptal, so that fruity Grüner Veltliner and Riesling develop their fragrances intensively.

Grüner Veltliner and Riesling in Kamptal

During our dinner at the Loisium Wine & Spa Resort, we get to know how different and, above all, how good the region's Grüner Veltliner and Riesling taste. One wine has the aroma of raspberry, the next that of blackberry or peach. They are all delicious. We learn that this aroma is already present in the grape and that it is up to the winemaker to maintain and intensify it during the fermentation process. I can confirm that they succeed here. I can recognize many of the aromas that the wines contain.

For two days, we will focus on the wines of the region: our culinary experiences at the Wine Resort and the tour through the old wine cellars of the wine experience world. We learn a lot of interesting facts about the wines of the region. The most beautiful is our picnic on Königsberg over Langenlois, where we enjoy a picnic on a festively set table in the evening sun against the backdrop of the vineyards. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from Kamptal seldom taste better. Bacchus could not have been more beautiful!
