Christmas on the fortress Hohensalzburg

Advent market at the Hohensalzburg Fortress

Merry Christmas on the fortress Hohensalzburg

The Hohensalzburg Fortress Christmas Market is an experience. Salzburg is a city that, with its historic old town, palaces and castles, is predestined to shine at Christmas. It does this in the truest sense of the word. There are a number of Christmas markets that turn the city into a sea of lights made of Christmas trees, light garlands, illuminated stars and candles. This includes Christmas markets such as the Salzburg Christmas Market on Dom and Residenzplatzthe oldest Christmas market in the city, but also as romantic as the Advent magic in Hellbrunn Palace with his fairytale forest of coniferous trees adorned with red balls.

However, none of Salzburg's Christmas markets is as contemplative as the Christmas market at Hohensalzburg Fortress. He is not as tall as the others. But he conveys better with his wooden huts in the courtyard of the fortress Hohensalzburg the spirit of Christmas. He does this especially when brass groups play Christmas songs in front of the sculpture group on the side wall of the castle church. Not only we are so put into Christmas mood. It also goes to other visitors to the Christmas market. For example, the young couple next to us who, kissed by the romantic mood, kissed extensively.

What is special about the Hohensalzburg Fortress Christmas Market

Maybe it's because the market is smaller than the others, or that you can only reach it via the fortress railway or a steep street. It's not as full as the other markets. There are also quieter corners. In these we can enjoy the Christmas tree in the center or the stars in front of the night sky all the more. Families with children can bake cookies in the fortress bakery. We won't let it be taken away from us and get to work ourselves, with the help of Katja and Moritz von Wellness-Bummler, Christina and Thomas von City, Sea, Country and Andreas from Travelwriticus colorful cookie figures are created. We paint and bake them on site. The fresh gingerbreads taste particularly good with our glass of mulled cider when we visit the Christmas market at Hohensalzburg Fortress.
