Visit to a winery in Emilia Romagna

On our trip to Cesenatico at the end of May we have the opportunity to visit one of the Emilia Romagna wineries in the hills behind the town. Here we get to know the wine of Emilia Romagna. Until then, when I heard the name Cesenatico, I only thought of sun, sea, and sand. We had no idea of the hinterland. I had no idea how beautiful this is. We only found out there that we could visit a winery in Emilia Romagna. We left Cesenatico in the morning, and learned about a cheese that matures in pits in Sogliano al Rubicone.

Then we drove through the hilly landscape to the Tenuta Neri winery. This is in the hills of Emilia Romagna. A low-rise building stands on a lot on one of the hills above the city. This is where Valeria and Giovanni Tenuta Neri live, who have a long family tradition of growing wine in Emilia Romagna. From the terrace of the home of the winemaker family we have a view of the bay and the city below us.

Try wine from Emilia Romagna directly from the winemaker

Valeria and Giovanni welcome us to the garden of their vineyard in Emilia Romagna, perched on a ridge. On one side we look out towards the sea. On the other side, hill after hill is lined up. Giovanni Neri explains to us: “Everything that you see up to the horizon belongs to our winery. It's actually my wife's family winery who manages it. I work in radiology in town during the day.” I can hardly believe that Valeria Tenuta Neri rules this wine empire, but she laughs: “When you grew up with it like I did, it's not that difficult. This winery in Emilia Romagna has been in my family for generations.”

Fruit for wine tasting
Fruit for wine tasting - unusual and sooo delicious!

Wines from the vineyards of Emilia Romagna

She invites us to sit at her table, where she has set out four wines from Emilia Romagna for us to taste: Carpineta, a sweet Albana wine typical of the region; Alma, a Merlot Cru, which I personally like best; Luis, a Sangiovese Superiore Reserva; and Casata Pasquinon, a Sangiovese Superiore grown in the vineyards of Emilia Romagna.

She puts a plate of apricots, strawberries and cherries from the garden on the table. A sight that makes my mouth water. Even if it surprises me that fruit is served here with the wine tasting. I can't resist the sight and I always take one of the cherries, which burst in my mouth when I bite into them. Or one of the apricots whose juice runs down my fingers. Fruit simply tastes better when it is harvested ripe from the tree! This fruit is tantalizingly good.

Proud winemakers with a winery in Emilia Romagna

While Valeria introduces us to her wines from Emilia Romagna, Giovanni settles into a hanging chair. He answers our questions. His son frolics on the lawn with the family dogs. Later, the grandmother joins us and welcomes us just as warmly as the rest of the family. No wonder we feel at home here. We don't want to leave. It doesn't matter that our Italian is more about listening than speaking. We communicate more with our hands than with our mouths. The warmth and hospitality of the Neri family will stay with us. As will their wines. We return to Cesenatico with these impressions.
