Ptuj in Slovenia

The place Ptuj in the north of Slovenia is not so small with its almost 24.000 inhabitants, its castle, which towers over the Drau, and with its old town, in which still much reminds of the Austrian past of the city.

Ptuj Slovenia is the oldest city in this country. The place was already populated in the Neolithic period. However, it only really gained importance under the Romans. Ptuj Slovenia is now commemorating this with festivals at which the population is reviving Roman times. Then they walk through the city wearing Roman costumes, shields and swords. In general, people are very aware of the history of the place and are planning further festivals in the future, at which the time of the Austrians in Ptuj should be revived. who Slow Travel like, Ptuj will like it.

City tour of the old town of Ptuj Slovenia

During our city tour through the Old Town we can see how closely the development of this city is interwoven with Austria. For almost 500 years, the common story lasted. After all, the city first belonged to the Archdiocese of Salzburg and from 1500 to the Duchy of Styria until the end of the First World War.

Our walk through the old town of Ptuj Slovenia leads us past the Minorite Monastery. Its facade is reminiscent of the times of Austrian influence. A few steps further, the pedestrian area of the city begins. On the street cafes invite to a cup of latte macchiato or a sundae. However, we have other plans and follow the road to the city administration.

This building stands on the town square. In front of it are some skeletal constructions made of metal, which are decorated with cow skulls. "It comes from an art exhibition that we held in Ptuj this summer," explains our companion Boris, who is very familiar with the history of the city and its inhabitants.

Attractions in Ptuj

We turn off through one of the alleys that branch off from the square in front of the city administration. So we pass the city theater of Ptuj to the main street through the old town. Here are nice shops lined up. In one I would like to rummage, there's cooking utensils, as I would like in my kitchen. Dotted measuring cups, as my grandma used them, are available here in all colors. I can only resist Petar because I decided to move away from this store, so we do not lose the connection to the rest of the group.

Hotel Mitra

Our destination is the Hotel Mitra, a newly renovated three-star hotel in Ptuj Slovenia, where the history of the city can be experienced in a tasteful way. The rooms have numbers and names. The hotel manager shows us, among other things, Rooster's Room, the room of the Hahn. And indeed: above the bed hangs a large painting depicting a rooster. Each room at Hotel Mitra has a different theme, making it a very individual niche in the city's history.
